After a fall filled with work travel, I am so happy to be HOME for the holidays! It’s truly time for reflection, celebration and maybe even a little relaxation!

Looking back on the year, one guiding principle stands out in my personal and professional life: “Don’t plan so much that you miss out on the opportunities that present themselves.” I have been quietly practicing this philosophy for more than 20 years, but it’s increasingly relevant for all of us who are engaged in project and product work.

Now, more than ever we are charged with bringing value to organizations. If your solution timelines are packed too tight, you will not have space to learn and adapt. You will miss out on valuable opportunities to change and grow. Don’t plan too much! Encourage your stakeholders to leave an “opportunity buffer” in their product/project plans.

My aversion to extreme planning served me well in 2015. Several new opportunities presented themselves, and I had time and energy to integrate them into my schedule. I am grateful for so many wonderful clients, amazing colleagues, and a tremendous support team! I wish each of you a peaceful holiday season that restores you for an awesome and exciting 2016!
