Even if your team isn’t agile, you can start applying an agile mindset to your work. Here are three ways to get started:
1) Focus on the user and customer experience. Discover and really focus on user goals. Determine what your users want or need when they interact with the organization or system. Think all the way through their journey and experience. Figure out how to make every touchpoint great. Go beyond and think about what touchpoints you could eliminate to get them to their goal faster and easier. Discuss user goals and touchpoints with the team. Hopefully it’s the best requirements discussion the team has had in a long time!
2) Encourage transparency. If your team and stakeholders could have a view into your work, what would they want to see? What would be meaningful? What information could you share to work better together and achieve goals even faster? It’s not just about making a library of project documents available to the team and stakeholders. It’s about providing information and insights in a way that is meaningful to others. In requirements, it means being transparent about WIP (work in progress), priorities, decisions, strategies and goals in business terms that are understandable to everyone.
3) Advocate for value over speed. Working really hard and really fast does not move the organization forward if you are working on the wrong things. If you understand what provides value for your users, you will inevitably speed up delivering what matters most!
